Abstract:
This investigation was concerned with determining the rate and extent of improvement in learning to track, range, and trigger a moving target as presented by the Pedestal Sight Manipulation Test. The results are believed to be relevant to training programs where the B-29 sighting station is involved. Twelve subjects were given a total of 228 trials, extending over 19 days, for the primary purpose of determining the rate and extent of improvement in performance on this test. This represents more practice than has been reported in any previous investigation. On the two final days of the experiment, changes were initiated in the procedure and apparatus to determine the influence of omission of triggering and removal of the tracking pipper from the reticle of the sighting station. The obtained scores seem to indicate that performance on the complex perceptual-motor task presented by the Pedestal Sight Manipulation Test is amenable to improvement over extended periods of training.
