Abstract:
This report describes the first year's effort of a two year program that has as its objective the development of improved self-contained, solid lubricated ball bearings capable of at least 25 hours operation at speeds approaching 60,000 rpm. The program encompasses a temperature range of -40F to 600F and a maximum load combination of 75 lb thrust/25 lb radial. The work is a follow-on effort to the completed Air Force funded program F33615-68-C-1250. During this reporting period, a high speed test stand was designed and manufactured that is capable of functionally evaluating the performance of solid lubricated, 207 ball bearings over a 30,000 to 60,000 rpm speed range. The device incorporates a 40 H.P., variable speed motor driving a transmission having a 15:1 gear ratio. A test head containing two test bearings is coupled to the output shaft of the transmission. The functional test portion of the program has thus far achieved a maximum life of 15 hours on a solid lubricated ball bearing operating at 30,000 rpm and a temperature of 200F.
