Abstract:
To further understand the mechanics of a rolling wheel, the relative movement between the contact surfaces of a rectangular block and plate under point loading is analyzed using Wilson's plane stress program, modified to incorporate friction at the contact surface. The program initially evaluates the contact nodal forces between two bodies by treating them as a continuous structure. Slipping of one body with respect to another is accomplished through an iterative techniques. The ratio of horizontal to vertical forces of the node at the contact surface is evaluated with regard to the surface friction coefficient, and the resulting ability to restrain contact surface displacements. When displacements are indicated, the node is uncoupled and a new one generated for for (sic) block. The original node remains with the plate. Solutions are obtained for both normal and inclined loads, as well as varying coefficients of friction. Results show that the region where displacements between the surface does not develop (i.e. adhesion) "moves" in the direction opposite to the application of external horizontal loads, and reaches the edge of the block for horizontal/vertical force ratios less than 0.21. Nodal forces and displacements generated are presented both in tables and graphically.
