Abstract:
A study was performed to determine the requirements for simulating urban area burns by means of crib fires or other synthetic type fires. Particular attention was given to the mass fire problem to the mass fire problem to be investigated during Operation Flambeau. A review of the literature revealed only a limited amount of pertinent information. Existing data pertain primarily to fires unaffected by interactions with other fires or by fire-induced changes in the environment. Wood-crib fires were found to be the most extensively used for studying building burns, but reported experimental results are not sufficient for relating behaviors of crib and building fires, particularly in the environment of a mass fire. An experimental program for obtaining this information has been outlined.
