Abstract:
Results of an investigation of a narrow five-line spectrum in irradiated Calcite single crystals are presented. The objective was to discover, by a systematic investigation of the properties of the electron paramagnetic resonance absorption spectrum of the five narrow lines, the defect center or centers responsible for the spectrum. A secondary objective was to make recommendations regarding the usefulness of this spectrum for a quantum-electronic device. Results indicated that this five line spectrum is generated by more than one defect center. The conclusion was reached by comparing the irradiated and unirradiated spectra. The spectrum of what is tentatively called a 'butterscotch' defect center was also discovered. This defect center appears to be a CO2 negative ion located at a carbonate iron site in calcite.
