Abstract:
Since the advent of the jet engine, introductions of new engine concepts, cycles and fuels have allowed great strides in extracting increased power from more compact, lighter aircraft engines. The next great improvements will be due to new material systems - mainly the advanced composites. The controlling factors involved, how they dictate the requirements for new material systems and how systems are being evolved to meet those needs afford an interesting backdrop to the newest onslaught on how to get more and more out of less and less - engine style.
