Abstract:
The use of precooked dehydrated and bite-sized compressed foods has been proposed for the nutritional support of man during prolonged aerospace missions. The effects of feeding a diet composed completely of these foods were studied in three 42-day experiments utilizing a total of 12 subjects maintained in a controlled environment. The experimental diet was equal in organoleptic acceptability to a diet composed of fresh, canned, and heat-processed foods. The diet form had no effect on subject body weight, nutrient balance, or food digestibility. Subjects did not notice increased gas production or encounter gastrointestinal distress.
