Abstract:
Fracture toughness and flaw growth characteristics of several materials were evaluated in the environment of aggressive propellants. The combinations evaluated were 2219-T851 aluminum/N2O4, 2219-T851 aluminum/F2, 2219-T851 aluminum/ClF5, 6Al-4V(ELI) titanium/F2, 6Al-4V(ELI) titanium/ClF5, 410(MOD) stainless steel/N2O4, and 2021-T81 aluminum/N2O4. Results indicate that described experimental technique is useful in screening engineering materials and establishment of service life requirements for pressurized components. 6Al-4V(ELI) titanium was found to be incompatible with the ClF5. Furthermore, it was established that 2021-T81 aluminum is most likely to create functional problems id used to make pressurized N2O4 storage vessels.
