Abstract:
This report is in six sections, i.e., Introduction, Theoretical Considerations for Ideal Solids, Cohesive Strength of Crystals, Strength of Inorganic Glassy Solids, Strength of Organic Polymers, and Examples of Theoretical Strength Calculations. Equations suitable for engineering purposes are developed for each class, along with a discussion of the assumptions involved, and the limitations and uncertainties applicable to the expression of strength in terms of other properties which are measurable experimentally. The report sets forth the considerations upon which the concept of theoretical strength is based, the methods by which calculations can be made, the information required to make the calculations quantitative, the sources of such information, and the level of confidence to be placed upon the results applicable to various types of materials.
