Abstract:
This paper examines the typical interrelationship amongst the engine, the aircraft, and the mission requirements to determine the probable future trends in new airbreathing propulsion cycles. Engine concepts employing multiple cycle, or multi-mode capability within a single engine are identified and their future potential defined. Examples are described in terms of recent results from feasibility research programs on several multi-mode engine concepts. The paper covers both aircraft and missile propulsion systems for the future.
